Justin Northwest (TX) sophomore Julien Smith has created some buzz this Fall with his strong play in recent weeks. Hit the jump as Smith provides insight on his game and find out which schools have jumped into his recruitment.
The Dallas area native turned some heads a few weeks back at the Elite 14 in Wichita Falls as a potent jumpshooter that can create his own offense off the bounce.
“I believe I shoot the ball very well from anywhere I get the ball, but I’m most effective off the dribble because I can create for myself and others.”
Julien was able to establish himself as the season progressed last Summer on the EYBL circuit with RM5.
“I felt I did well as the season went along, I got better and better and got into a better rhythm.”
While Smith doesn’t hold an offer just yet, he is picking up regional interest and is likely to receive that first official offer sooner rather than later.
“SMU, TCU, Tulsa, Tulane, Texas State, OSU, Louisiana Tech and UC Davis are all showing interest.”
With his recruitment still in the infancy stages, Julien is looking to become more explosive while being able to absorb contact at the rim.
“I’m working to improve my athleticism and finishing through contact. My goals are to win States and to get those first couple of offers.”
While he’s a bit under the radar on the national stage, we really like Smith’s scoring ability. A big guard at a legit 6’2 and perhaps still growing, he has the skillset of a three level scorer that can slide to either the 1 or 2 spot. If he can improve his first step acceleration a bit, he’s going to be one of the better guards in the country for the 2020 class.
