ROMEO WEEMS, SF, 6’6, 215, NEW HAVEN HS (MI)/THE FAMILY (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Offer

Ranking Projection: Mid/High 4 Star

Other Offers: Michigan State, Iowa, Missouri, Creighton, UofD, Oakland University, VCU

Scouting: High motor small forward that scores at all 3 levels. Has plus handle and can create his own shot off the dribble and finish at the rim. Nice back to the basket game, consistently scores in the post with turnaround jumper after backing defenders down in the paint. Three point shot vastly improved over the last year, now an average/above average shooter. Great motor and tremendous effort in terms of rebounding and defense, goes all out on nearly every possession. Good athlete with nice strength and verticality. Legit 6’6 with 6’9 wingspan. Projects as small forward at the next level that is likely to be a very good two-way prospect with the ability to play multiple spots on the floor.

Recruitment: Appears to be an MSU lean, making multiple visits to East Lansing within the past month. Michigan needs to make up a lot of ground here.

MARK ‘ROCKET’ WATTS, GUARD, 6’2, 175, OLD REDFORD ACADEMY (MI)/THE FAMILY (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Offer

Ranking Projection: Low/Mid 4 Star

Other Offers: Michigan State, USC, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Marquette, Missouri, Oakland University, Iowa, Cincinnati, Alabama, TCU, Xavier, UNLV

Scouting: high level scorer from the perimeter with range out to 28 feet. Good shooter off the catch and has improved his ballhandling over the last year and becoming more of a combo-guard. Limited athlete that lacks ideal size to be a prototype SG, nor does he have ideal vision/creating ability to man the PG spot. Projects as a combo-guard at the next level with continued development of his ballhandling/creating ability.

Recruitment: would be shocked to see Watts end up at Michigan, despite unofficial visit to UM on Saturday for football game vs. MSU.

TYRESE MAXEY, GUARD, 6’2, 190, SOUTH GARLAND HS (TX)/RM5 ELITE (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Serious Interest

Ranking Projection: 5 star/Top 25 Prospect

Other Offers: Stanford, Texas, Michigan State, Oregon, UCLA, LSU, TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas A&M, UNLV, West Virginia, Florida State, Cal, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, Arizona State, USC, Marquette

Scouting: elite scorer that averaged over 16 points per game while playing up a year in the 17u EYBL division. Very good shooter that has range out to 25 feet off the dribble or the catch. Great shot creating ability for himself or teammates. Good athlete that can get to the rim and finish with either hand. Very good isolation player that can break down a defense and score at all three levels. Good passer that consistently finds teammates for open looks in scoring position. Can play either guard spot at the next level, elite prospect.

Recruitment: Has legitimate interest in Michigan, paid his way for unofficial visit to Ann Arbor earlier in the Summer, where he was not offered. Father subsequently took assistant coaching job at SMU. While that is certainly a huge factor, don’t think it is automatic that Tyrese ends up there. He’s a high character kid with a good academic resume.

HARLOND BEVERLY, SHOOTING GUARD, 6’3, 180, SOUTHFIELD CHRISTIAN HS (MI)/REACH LEGENDS (NY2LA CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: Low/Mid 4 Star

Other Offers: Michigan State, Arizona State, Toledo, Baylor, Eastern Michigan, Cleveland State, UofD, Oral Roberts

Scouting: very good athlete with plus handle that can create his own offense off the bounce. Good shooter off the catch from three despite some funky mechanics. Needs to develop vision a bit in order to become more dynamic playmaker. Has good size for a combo-guard at legit 6’3. Very high upside prospect that will emerge as a top 50-75 type prospect on all sites within a year in my opinion. Projects as a combo-guard once vision improves, as the handle and shooting are already above average/good.

Recruitment: took unofficial visit to UM Saturday for the football game vs. MSU. Michigan has not offered, but would be wise to do so in short order. Harlond is not an MSU type player stylistically in my opinion despite the fact that he’s visited a few times and holds an offer. Is truly open at this point and prefers a school that allows guards to ‘get busy’

DJ CARTON, GUARD, 6’1, 180, BETTENDORF HS (IA)/QUAD CITY ELITE (NY2LA CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: Low/Mid 4 Star

Other Offers: Illinois, Wisconsin, Marquette, Creighton, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, IUPUI, Kansas State, Northern Iowa

Scouting: superb athlete that has great elevation, good straight line speed and nice first step acceleration. Almost impossible to stop him from getting to the rim in isolation with his combination of ballhandling and athleticism. Displays ability to knock down shots from beyond the arch off the catch and the dribble. More of lead-guard that looks to score as opposed to a true PG that distributes. Lack of size is the only issue, as he’s only a legit 6’1. With this type of explosion and ballhandling ability though, he’s no doubt an upper tier prospect. Projects to be a PG at the next level unless he grows a few inches.

Recruitment: took unofficial visit to Michigan a few weeks back so certainly some legit interest, despite no offer. Appears likely to stay a bit closer to home at this point, with Wisconsin being the favorite.

KYLE STURDIVANT, POINT GUARD, 6’2, 190, NORCROSS HS (GA)/NIKE TEAM FLORIDA (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: High 3 Star/Low 4 Star

Other Offers: Memphis, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, USC, Kennesaw State, South Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Florida Gulf Coast, Middle Tennessee

Scouting: true point guard that has good vision and is a willing ball mover. Finds open teammates after probing paint for easy dumpoffs at the basket and kickouts to shooters for jumpshots. A plus handle on a functional basis, as he gets to his spots despite lacking ideal change of direction and change of speed dribbles. As a scorer, he has a plus midrange jumper off the dribble, but not a great shooter from beyond the arch. Sturdivant connected at 31.2% during EYBL play this summer despite taking only 32 attempts in 22 games. Limited athlete that lacks ideal straight line speed, lateral agility and first step acceleration.

Recruitment: Michigan stopped in for open gym in September, and it appears both sides are working toward building a relationship as UM keeps tabs/evaluates his game moving forward.

CHRIS HARRIS, SHOOTING GUARD, 6’2, 200, SOUTH GARLAND HS (TX)/RM5 ELITE (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: High 3 Star/Low 4 Star

Other Offers: Texas A&M, SMU, Baylor, Tulsa, UNLV, North Texas, Memphis

Scouting: high level shooter that knocks down jumpers off the dribble or the catch. Has range out to 25 feet right now. Has a plus handle and can create his own shot, but not a primary ballhandler. A bit undersized for a SG at 6’2, but compensates with superior strength. Decent athlete that shows some elevation at the rim when finishing and good body control but lacks ideal speed and first step acceleration. Projects to be an undersized SG at the next level, but would thrive in Coach Beilein’s system coming off down screens.

Recruitment: Michigan stopped in for open gym a few weeks back, and it appears both sides are working toward building a relationship as UM keeps tabs/evaluates his game moving forward. I can tell you that Chris is most definitely interested in Michigan. Also the HS and AAU teammate of 19 target Tyrese Maxey.

DONAVAN MOORE, GUARD, 6’2, 180, WEST BLOOMFIELD HS (MI)/THE FAMILY (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: High 3 Star/Low 4 Star

Other Offers: Bradley, IUPUI, Oakland University, UofD, Toledo, Illinois-Chicago, Toledo, Tennessee State, North Dakota

Scouting: best thing about Moore at this point is athleticism and physicality. Donavan possesses good verticality, plays strong and aggressive off the dribble and embraces contact. He flashes some nice isolation ability, knocking down triples off the dribble but does not appear to be a classic shooter that will be utilized coming off down screens and the like. Doesn’t possess great change of direction or speed off the dribble, but gets to his spots with a good first step and the ability to absorb contact while maintaining a hard dribble.

Recruitment: Moore just recently moved from the Chicago area to Michigan, both sides appear to be in the process of establishing the relationship as Michigan evaluates Donavan moving forward.

KEVIN MCCULLAR, SHOOTING GUARD, 6’4, 180, KAREN WAGNER HS (TX)/YIIS (ADIDAS CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: Low 4 Star

Other Offers: Texas Tech, Houston, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Tulsa, LA Tech, UTSA, North Texas, Northern Colorado.

Scouting: versatility is the best facet of Kevin’s game. He’s a three level scorer with the ability to knock down perimeter shots off the dribble or the catch. As a penetrator, he embraces physicality and absorbs contact quite well for a prospect with a thin frame. Really like his ability to receive the ball 16-20 feet out make one change of direction and get to the rim and finish or draw a foul. Not a great athlete by any means, as Kevin does not possess blow-by acceleration or tremendous verticality, but his spatial awareness is very good. I think he’d be a great fit at Michigan and one of the more underrated kids in the country. With some work with the strength and conditioning program, think he’s got some serious potential.

Recruitment: the coaching staff wants Michigan to take an unofficial visit to campus at some point, where it appears he’d likely receive an offer. High character kid also receiving interest from Stanford.

JOE GIRARD, SHOOTING GUARD, 6’1, 175, GLEN FALLS HS (NY), CITY ROCKS (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Serious Interest

Ranking Projection: High 3 Star

Other Offers: Washington, St. Louis, Penn State, UMass, George Washington, Boston College, St. John’s, Marist, Saint Joe’s, Tulane, High Point, Vermont, Siena, BYU, Middle Tennessee,

Scouting: elite shooter that knocked down nearly 45% of his shots from beyond the arch while playing up a year in the 17u division of EYBL. Very undersized SG that lacks the handle to play on-ball. Below average athlete that does not possess the straight line speed or lateral agility to contain dribble penetration on defense at the high-major level. Projects to be the typical ‘just shooter’ type at the collegiate level.

Recruitment: took unofficial visit to Michigan in January, coaching stopped by for open gym in September. Coach Beilein covets shooters for his system, so there is serious interest without doubt despite no offer. I’d expect Michigan to take a wait and see approach to see where we stand with other 19 targets before potentially offering.

JORDAN MITCHELL, WING, 6’7, 205, MONTVERDE ACADEMY (FL), ALL OHIO (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: Mid 4 Star

Other Offers: Xavier, Ohio State, Iowa, Florida,

Scouting: high level athlete with prototype size/length at the wing spot at 6’7 and a nice wingspan. Once considered a borderline 5* prospect, his skillset hasn’t developed as much as initially anticipated. Can handle the ball a bit but not well enough to be a primary ballhandler in the half-court. Below average shooter that cannot space the floor from distance. Jordan is a high-upside, low floor prospect with serious potential to be a nice two-way wing at the next level but needs tons of skill development to reach the desired level.

Recruitment: Currently at Montverde Academy (FL) but originally from Columbus. Not an OSU lock by any means, and no doubt has legit interest in Michigan. Staff seems to have cooled on him over the last year based on his lack of shooting  prowess.

ALONZO GAFFNEY, WING/FORWARD, 6’9, 190, GARFIELD HEIGHTS HS (OH), OHIO BASKETBALL CLUB

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: High 4 Star/5 Star

Other Offers: Kansas, Georgetown, Ohio State, Iowa, Florida, Louisville, Marshall, West Virginia, Tulane, Penn State, Cincinnati, Pitt

Scouting: NBA prototype measurements for a wing/forward at a legit 6’9 and a wingspan exceeding 7 feet. Very good shooter off the catch, great mechanics on a smooth looking shot with nice arch and rotation. Has some ballhandling ability at that size, but his handle can be a bit loose in traffic. Good verticality combined with his height/length allow him to finish with ease in transition and at the rim. Lacks physicality and motor when rebounding, and needs to add muscle mass to his frame. The best thing about Gaffney is upside, he has NBA potential written all over him with continued development of his skillset and body. Projects as a 3/4 that knocks down perimeter shots while beating bigger defenders off the dribble to the rim. Should be able to guard multiple positions on defense and provide helpside rim protection.

Recruitment: took unofficial visit to Michigan on Saturday for the game vs. MSU. Would be a great fit as a stretch 4, but word is that he’s a heavy lean to North Carolina should they offer.

MALIK HALL, WING/FORWARD, 6’7, 207, SUNRISE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (KS), MOKAN ELITE (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Medium Interest

Ranking Projection: Mid/High 4 Star

Other Offers: SMU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Missouri, Kansas, Northwestern, Illinois, St.Louis, Texas A&M, Iowa, Butler

Scouting: very versatile and skilled prospect that averaged 10.7 points and nearly 6 rebounds per game in EYBL while playing up a year on the 17u division. Three level scorer that can knock down triples off the catch, post smaller defenders ups, attack closeouts and score at the rim and create shots from the high post. Plus rebounder that embraces physicality on the glass and will give multiple jumps. Good athlete that shows some explosion around the rim when finishing, has fluid movements. Projects as a 3/4 matchup nightmare that can space the floor with his shooting, take bigger defenders off the dribble and bully smaller defenders in the paint. Would really love to add this type of prospect to the roster.

Recruitment: plays HS ball in Kansas, but originally from Chicago. The staff certainly has interest, but until Hall takes a visit, an offer is not forthcoming.

CARRINGTON MCCASKILL, WING/FORWARD, 6’7, 180, RENAISSANCE HS (MI), REACH LEGENDS (NY2LA CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: High 3 Star/Low 4 Star

Other Offers: Buffalo, Kent State, UofD, Cleveland State, Milwaukee, UT Martin

Scouting: elite athlete that is extremely explosive around the rim. Skillset still a bit raw, but does show some ability to change direction with the ball on some occasions. Flashes ability to knock down shots from beyond the arch when feet are set. Great offensive rebounder that is very light on his feet and gets off the ground extremely quick. Good rim protecter as well. Low floor, high-ceiling prospect that is going to absolutely blow up if his skillset improves marginally. Projects as a small-ball 4 at the next level that finishes at the rim, stretches the floor a bit and defends multiple spots on the floor.

Recruitment: visited Michigan for a few games last year and the Wolverines are definitely keeping tabs. Visited MSU for the football game against Iowa a few weeks back.

VERNON CAREY JR., BIG, 6’10, 260, UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (FL), NIKE TEAM FLORIDA (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: 5 Star/Top 10 Prospect

Other Offers: Kentucky, Duke, UNC and many others

Scouting: son of former NFL OT Vernon Carey. Elite post prospect that can shoot the ball well from distance, has elite vision for a post-player and is a good scorer with his back to the basket. An absolute man-child at 6’10 and close to 270 pounds of solid-muscle. Think an explosive Nick Ward with a 3 ball and vision.

Recruitment: reported a Michigan offer in September, which is probably more likely to be a ‘you visit campus and you have an offer’ type of situation. Not much to talk about here, I don’t see Michigan as a serious player in this recruitment at all.

DREW TIMME, BIG, 6’9, 210, PEARCE HS (TX), NIKE PROSKILLS (EYBL CIRCUIT)

Interest Level: Low/Preliminary Interest

Ranking Projection: Mid 4 Star

Other Offers: Gonzaga, Purdue, TCU, SMU, Creighton, Tulsa, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Utah State, Illinois, Baylor, Kansas State

Scouting: had a tremendous Summer on the EYBL circuit averaging over 12 points and 8 rebounds per game on 60% from the field playing up a year in the 17u division. Face-up post prospect that beats slower defenders off the dribble and runs the floor well in transition. In the paint Timme is able to score with his back to the basket with plus footwork and a nice jumphook.  Good rebounder that provides some rim protection and shotblocking. Not an explosive athlete, but not sub-par by any means either. Fluid and moves well. Projects as a 4/5 that can score from either the high-post or with his back to the basket and playmake for others with his passing.

Recruitment: parents originally from Michigan, so the Midwest connection is there. Staff went to check out his open gym a few weeks back. Both sides appear to be in the process of establishing the relationship, as Michigan evaluates their needs for the 19 class.
